Guana Bay

Deserted - that's the first word that comes to people's mind when they talk about the beach at Guana Bay on the eastern coast of St. Maarten. It's actually quite a large beach, with wide swaths of sand flanking the often significant surf. They bay opens directly to the Atlantic Ocean, with no reefs to break up the incoming waves.

If you're into surfing or bodyboarding, this is probably going to be one of the best spots on the island for you to hang out. There's a good chance that the only other people you'll see at this beach are other surfers or bodyboarders. Reports are that waves break both right and left. Also, be aware that there can sometimes be strong rip currents when the weather is right.

If you aren't into surfing, there's no reason you can't visit this beach of course. It's a great place to spend a quite, solitary day. Be aware that there are no amenities to be found here, and no shade. You'll need to lug along not only a cooler with food and drinks, but also a chair and umbrella if you don't want to be laying in the sun. It's a nice place to go for a walk though, offering views of Iguana Cay and St. Barths.
