This 2 km long beach is located nearly in the center of Guanacaste Province in Costa Rica, Playa Avellana is primarily known as a prime surfing spot. In fact, it has been nicknamed 'little Hawaii' by local surfers, which is apropos considering that swells here can exceed 15 feet.
It's also a great place to enjoy the beach, or just to sit and watch people enjoy the beach and the surf. It's not the best choice for swimming, owing not only to the large waves but also strong currents around the area.
