South Puntarenas

Puntarenas is a province of Costa Rica that actually covers almost the entire Pacific (western) coast of the country. Since it is so large, there are actually fairly substantial differences between different parts of the province. The southern area, bordering Panama, is covered in large areas of costal rain forests.

The lush growth here is due to the copious rainfall and hot, sunny days. Home to many rare and endangered species, it is largely uninhabited and is definitely more remote than other areas of the country.

Beaches here are as beautiful as anywhere, but generally come with considerably fewer people. Whether looking for a good snorkeling or scuba diving spot, somewhere to surf, or just a quiet place to lay and enjoy the sounds of the ocean, the southern end of Puntarenas is a great option if you want to be a little further away from civilization.
